How to Decorate Your Student House on a Budget

22 Oct 2019

Student finances can be really tight, but there’s also plenty to spend that money on. Technology, such as laptops and phones, books, big nights out, festivals and of course making sure you have the coolest uni house on the block. Here are some tips and ideas for how to decorate your student home on a budget.

Fairy Lights

Fairy lights are as cheap as chips, super simple to install and create a great ambiance in a living space or a bedroom. Fairy lights are available in a wide range of sizes and styles and so you can get creative and bring your home to life. Try our range of novelty lighting for some inspo.

Reading and Desk Lamps

Whilst we’re on the subject of lighting, another student house essential is a reading or desk lamp for all those hours you’ll spend slaving away. Good reading light not only means that you can get through texts a bit quicker, but also without harming your vision – so well worth spending a little money on.

The Obligatory Traffic Cone

Whether it’s a traffic cone, a street sign or some other relic from that big night out, collecting freebies is all part and parcel of student life. Never turn down flyers, posters and other giveaways – you never know how they could be used to help decorate your house.

Scour the Charity Shops

Look hard enough and you can pick up pretty much anything you need from charity shops and flea markets, including furniture, ornaments and even things for the kitchen. The trick here is to bide your time and wait for the perfect item as opposed to just purchasing random stuff – although that can be fun too.

Looking Local

If you’ve moved away to study or you’re relatively unfamiliar with the local area you may need a map. Why not combine home decoration with some practical considerations? Buy a cheap map of the local area and a second hand picture frame and voilà! You have something cool to hang on the wall and a handy reference for when you’re looking to navigate the area.

Grow Your Own

All student homes benefit from having some plants dotted around the place, but established plants can be expensive – what to do? One solution is to grow your own, start by picking up some fresh herb seeds; things such as basil, coriander and parsley will all grow well indoors, look lovely and can be used in cooking, saving you a few extra quid.

Iconic Inspiration

For many years Che Guevara took the prize for top student poster, but now there are a myriad of icons from the politics, arts and entertainment world that might make it onto you wall. Not only does this help in terms of creating a talking point it also serves as inspiration for life – something we all need a little of from time to time.

To decorate your student home on a budget, you need to be creative and have a little vision, but what’s most important is that you have fun and express yourself.
