How to make the perfect bed

A perfectly made bed is the key to any well styled bedroom. In a guest room, it looks welcoming and considerate while in a master or children’s bedroom it looks like you’ve got your priorities and routine in order. Plus making your bed in the morning sets up your day, by beginning your morning with an accomplishment, you’re ready to take on the world and adopt more good habits.

Whether is a complex array of cushions in your guest room or a simpler design for your master bedroom – we’ve complied a list of the best beds and tips on how to achieve them.

Start at the top

We recommend starting the bed making process by taking everything off the bed, so you’re left with a blank canvas. If you can, air your duvet out by hanging it over the banister – this is particularly important if you have a feathered duvet and you’ll need to redistribute the feathers and make them even. Airing out your duvet also keeps it smelling fresh and prevents your duvet from getting moist.

Smart Sheets

Making hospital corners with your sheet is a great way to begin the process as it gives you a clean and tidy starting point. We’ve found this perfect 6 step method on Crane and Canopy

Step 1: With your fitted sheet already on the mattress, lay the flat sheet on top. Make sure that it hangs evenly on the bed.

Step 2: Start at one corner at the foot of the bed. Slightly lift the mattress and tuck hanging fabric along the foot of the bed. The excess fabric should now be hanging on the side of the mattress.

Step 3: Grab hold of the excess fabric. Lift it up and place on top of the mattress. The edge of the sheet should form a 45-degree angle with the corner of your mattress.

Step 4: Hold the fabric forming a 45-degree angle. Tuck in hanging fabric along the side of the mattress and let the sheet fall.

Step 5: Adjust the edge of the sheet to the corner of the mattress and tuck in.

Step 6: Repeat steps 2 through 5 on the remaining corner.

Dreamy Duvet

Next is the duvet. Collect your duvet from the banister and give in one final shake. Bring the duvet to the bed and lift the duvet over the bed in a Mexican wave motion, making sure that there is an even amount of duvet on either side of the bed and there is about six inches of space at the top for your pillows. If you use a sheet in between the mattress sheet and duvet then fold this over the top of the mattress. Optionally, you could also make hospital corners with the duvet, but we prefer the draped look.

Puffy Pillows

Now for the best bit. There are a million and one ways to arrange the pillows on your bed but, we’ve put our favourites below. Before you start, give your pillows a good plumping to even out the feathers and make them look even.

For our favourite king size bed pillow arrangement, you’ll need:

  • 3 euro pillows
  • 2 king pillows
  • 2 standard pillows
  • 1 accent pillow

Start with the three euro pillows and lean the against the headboard. Place the king pillows in front of them and the standard pillows in the middle of the kings. Finish the look off with a contrasting accent pillow in front of the standard pillows.

For our favourite queen size bed pillow arrangement, you’ll need:

  • 2 euro pillows
  • 4 standard pillows
  • 1 or 2 accent pillows

Start with two of your standard pillows against the headboard followed by the two euro pillows placed in the centre of the bed. Then the two remaining standard pillows and finish the look with our accent pillow or pillows.

For our favourite single bed bed pillow arrangement, you’ll need:

  • 1 standard pillow
  • 2 accent pillows
  • 1 bolster

Start by placing your standard pillow and a neutral accent pillow on top of one another against the headboard and finish the look by simply placing your second accent pillow and bolster cushion in front of the stacked pillows. You place them one in front of each other or side by side.
