Well, that depends, doesn’t it? The area of the room and the function of that area are going to influence what you need from your lighting.
For instance, above bed wall lights serve as a focal point, a decorative touch, but they can also act in place of bedside lamps if you’re looking to conserve some surface space. Wall lights above the bed are going to kick up the décor a few notches so in combination with a headboard or some artwork… it’s going to draw eyes right to it.
Then, if it’s vanity wall lights you’re after, having wall lights on both sides of the mirror will shine even and flattering lighting for when you’re getting ready.
Or maybe it’s accent wall lights that you’re after. Using wall lights to bring some extra attention to the architectural features, artwork of decorative stylings that you love the most in your bedroom is guaranteed to add depth and visual interest to the room. Not to mention it’ll distract from any features that you just wish weren’t there. The art of misdirection goes a long way in interior design.
Or… wall mounted reading lights. Another great use of wall lighting. Choose a style with adjustable arms or swivel heads, pick a bright bulb and you’ve got the perfect task lighting. Install by the bed or near a chair or reading nook.
Sometimes we just can’t accommodate bedside table lamps, as much as we might want to. Bedside wall lights are the ultimate space saving hack for any bedroom that’s a little too tight a squeeze for full sized bed side accompaniments. Lack of space shouldn’t mean lack of light. Having wall lights either side of or above the bed brings in that ambience and acts as strong task lighting.
First things first, you can do whatever you want. It’s your bedroom!
In a smaller bedroom with lower ceilings wall lights could absolutely be sufficient lighting. The key is just about making sure they’re bright enough and provide enough coverage.
Once your bedroom starts to get bigger, and the ceilings get higher… it’s tough to get that brightness and coverage you need with wall lights alone. But, if you’re just trying to avoid ceiling lights – then bring in some floor or table lamps to work alongside the wall lamps and you’ll be golden.
