What's the best type of lighting for a home office?
It’s a big question, and you’re right to ask it. Home office lighting often seems more complicated than it needs to be.
The ultimate thing to consider, the only non-negotiable, is you need to be able to see well. We’re trying to do away without eye-strain, not cause it in the name of ambience. The way you do that is pretty much up to you, whatever makes you want to spend the time in there. If you want a good ceiling light, the décor influence of a floor lamp or the task lighting saviour, a table lamp – or… all three.
How can I optimise natural light in my home office?
Well, not be obvious, but large windows and facing your entire home towards the sun will help. But, that’s very rarely in our control, is it?
Desk position is going to be the best way to make sure you’re soaking up as much sun as possible. Popping your desk/workstation in front of a window is the way to do that. Face your computer into the room to limit glare on the screen, so pesky. You can also use window treatments to control glare and brightness to your liking.
What is task lighting and why is it important in a home office?
Task lighting is just what it sounds like, it’s specific lighting for tasks. It’s usually quite a strong light that can be angled at whatever is the task at hand. A desk lamp is a classic example of task lighting but really it’s any lighting that does a specific job, or makes that job safe to do.
It’s especially important in a home office because you’re in hyperfocus, your eyes are set on the details and poor lighting can make this costly.
