How do you light a dining room?

  The dining room is such an important room in every home; where you sit down for your Christmas meal, chat over a cuppa with friends and rant about your day. The dining room is much more than just a place to sit and eat dinner – it is the heart of your home. For this reason, lighting is so important; not just to ensure you can see what you’re doing, but to create atmosphere and set the mood for any occasion.  Typically, the dining room is used a lot more at night, so the lighting options need to be a bit more dynamic and flexible, for you to be able to change the whole vibe of the room, depending on the occasion.   Given the diversity of the room, there are so many options available to you when it comes to lighting, which can be a bit overwhelming. Make your dining table the feature

Atmosphere is crucial, especially in the dining room – and what better place to make the feature of the room than the dining table itself. The dining table is where it all happens, whether that is having people round for a sit-down meal, or just a chat over a coffee with some friends – the table is the main focus of the room, which is why it needs to be well lit.   To do this, you will want to choose lighting that specifically highlights the dining table, rather than the whole room itself. So, how do you do that? Well, our first suggestion would be to investigate our pendant lighting options. Pendant lighting is a great way to make your table the focal point of the room, by being both stylish and functional.  When choosing a pendant light, we recommend getting one that hangs relatively low to the table, because this creates a low, atmospheric vibe. One of our favourite pendant lighting options is our Sheridan Steampunk Electric Pendant. Use more than one pendant lighting option

If you have a slightly bigger dining room table, or have a bigger space to light, then you might want to consider making use of more than one pendant light. You can achieve this by either pairing together the same pendant light, such as the one we’ve mentioned, or clustering together a few to create an artistic lighting display. Odd numbers generally work better, so you will probably want to go for either 3 or 5 pendant lights at a time.  

Separate an open plan dining room

Sometimes, open plan spaces can feel a bit pushed together and you can’t really distinguish between each ‘section’ of the room. In an open plan kitchen diner, a light over the dining table will help you to ‘zone off’ the room and create the illusion of two separate places. Try something a little unique

Be bold

Often, people opt for darker, or more neutral tones when lighting their dining room – but they miss the opportunity to really let their personality shine through by adding a bold burst of colour to this room. If you are wanting to add that bold look to your dining room, try to replace that black shade with a red, or even yellow one instead.
