What is a golf ball bulb?
A golf ball bulb is exactly what it sounds like, a small, round light bulb, roughly 45mm across, that gets its name from its neat spherical shape. They're a compact alternative to the standard pear-shaped GLS bulb, designed for fittings where a full-size bulb simply won't fit.

Size, mostly, though it's an easy one to mix up. Golf ball bulbs are small and compact, typically around 45mm in diameter, making them ideal for smaller fittings and more delicate fixtures. Globe bulbs are much larger (often 80-125mm across) and are usually chosen for their bold, statement appearance in decorative
pendants, oversized fittings, or spaces where the
bulb is the focal point. If you're not sure which you need, a good rule of thumb is - golf ball for smaller or enclosed fittings, globe for when you want the bulb to be the star of the show.
Are golf ball bulbs energy efficient?
Yes, especially if you choose LED versions, which is what we'd always recommend. LED golf ball bulbs use up to 85% less energy than their old incandescent equivalents, and they last significantly longer too (often up to 25,000 hours, compared to around 1,000 hours for a traditional bulb). So, while they might cost a little more upfront, you'll more than make it back on your energy bills over time. They also reach full brightness instantly, no waiting around for them to warm up.
What cap fitting do golf ball bulbs come in?
Golf ball bulbs are available in the most common UK fittings, so replacing your existing bulbs should be nice and straightforward. The fittings to look out for are: B22 (the classic bayonet cap, push and twist), E27 (large Edison screw), E14 (small Edison screw), and B15 (small bayonet cap). Not sure which you need? Can golf ball bulbs be used in enclosed light fittings?
It depends on the bulb, so always worth checking the product details before you buy. Some LED golf ball bulbs are rated for use in enclosed or semi-enclosed fittings. Others aren't, because heat can build up and shorten the bulb's lifespan. The good news is that LED golf ball bulbs run much cooler than old incandescent versions, making them a safer choice for tighter spaces. If your fitting is fully enclosed, look out for bulbs that are specifically marked as suitable, it'll be noted on the product listing.
