Types of Kitchen Spotlights

Spotlights come in many forms, all shapes, sizes and amounts.

You can get spotlight bars, you can get spotlights on rectangular, circular, and square ceiling plates and, of course, you can get single spotlights.

Spotlight bars are, would you guess, bars with spotlights spaced intermittently along the length of the fixture. The length of the bar and number of spotlights varies depending on the fixture but you can quite commonly find them with 3 to 8 spotlights.

Multiway spotlights come on circular, square or rectangular plates (and probably every other shape known to man, out there somewhere, in the workshop of a lighting maverick) and have a similar variety with size and number of spotlights.

And the lone wolves of the spotlight world… the single spotlights. For when your kitchen is just too big that no multiway spotlight could possibly handle the enormity of the space. Sprinkle as many single spotlights as you need throughout the space, preferably at evenly spaced intervals.

Key Features of Kitchen Spotlights

Spotlights fire off multiple streams of light and those streams are adaptable. What a winner! This means that in a room with complicated layouts like a kitchen it’s much easier to work around the obstacles and shadows created by upper cabinets and other such fixtures. This is what makes spotlights such good task lighting for kitchen spaces.

Choosing the Right Kitchen Spotlights

Big decisions are always about big considerations. Really give the time and thought to the space you’re working with, your expectations of it and… well, just what you like, really.

One of the most obvious factors to think about is the size (and shape) of your kitchen area. If you first consider the shape of the space it will give you a good idea has to which type of spotlight is going to tackle the job best. A good starting point is thinking that the shape of the room, if possible, would be a good shape to mimic with a spotlight. If you have a long, narrow kitchen space it might be fair to assume a spotlight bar or multiway spotlight on a rectangular plate could do a nice job and getting the place all lit up and dazzling.

Whereas if you’re in a square kitchen then a multiway spotlight on a circular or square plate might do a better job at dispersing all that lovely light evenly across the space.

Of course, none of these suggestions are without exception, and as we’re without the exact dimensions of your lovely kitchen it’s tough for us to say what is absolutely going to work in your space. When in doubt that your funky shaped kitchen could adequately lit there’s always the option to bring in the single spotlights in and create your own dynamic lighting layout.
