Benefits of Living Room Lamp Shades
The most obvious benefit of a living room lamp shade is the decorative aspect, it sit there and looks pretty! A great way to bring new textures, colours and shapes into your living room if you’re looking for a change. New rug? Kind of clashes with that lamp shade over in the corner there, doesn’t it? Well, good news that it’s a very easy and pretty cheap fix to get your lounge looking totally cohesive once again.
Who doesn’t want that option to personalise their space? Soft furnishings are one of the most accessible means of customising a room, changing up colour schemes, bringing in textural interest. Lamp shades are a natural extension of those furnishings, new room feeling without the extremes of demolition or paying off a new sofa for 3 years.
Then there’s the actual… lighting aspect. Lamp shades might have more of an impact on the behaviour of light then you think. They direct and diffuse lighting, so picking the right lamp shade for your living room is a decision that needs a little bit of thought, how is your space set up and what does it require of your lighting?
If you’ve got a glare issue – lamp shade.
If the lighting is too harsh and does not bring in that cosy, ambient, mood lit vibe you’re looking for – lamp shade.
If you need a little more control on where your light is focused, for task lighting or showing off certain décor – lamp shade.
If you’re desperately trying to tie a colour scheme together – lamp shade.
You get the jist. Lamp shades are amazingly diverse and solve a whole heap of common and easily avoidable issues.
Styles and Designs of Living Room Lamp Shades
There aren’t any rigid rules with interior décor. That would be no fun at all, and at the end of the day it’s your house and you can dress it up any way you please.
Having said that, the world of lamp shades is a diverse one and we can understand not knowing where to start on your journey, or maybe you know exactly what you want and just not where to find it. Wherever you are on your mission to lamp shade heaven, getting clued in on the differences between the many styles.
Starting off with traditional and classic, naturally. These styles are timeless designs, you’ll see a lot of pleated and fabric shades. A good investment style because, let’s face it, they’ve been around long enough to know they’re not going anywhere soon.
Modern and minimalist are on the opposite end of this spectrum with a focus on clean lines, sleek materials, and a contemporary feel. Expect to find glass and metal shades in this little corner of the lamp shade world. These shades can feel very ‘now’ but they can also nod back to that 60s modernity.
Truly the opposite of minimalist lamp shade styles are the bohemian and eclectic styles, more of everything please! Vibrant colours, patterns, textures. No such thing as clashing in this maximalist area of home design. Although, to be fair, you really do make your own rules with eclectic styling so you could bring in the single most minimalist lamp shade as a curve ball, why not?
If you take bohemian styles and tone it down a notch, add in a little nature – you’ve got the rustic styles. You’ll find earthy tones, natural materials (think rattan, wicker, burlap) and an unbeatable rustic feel.
Materials and Fabrics
A lot of us have one thought when we think of a lamp shade and that’s a fabric, drum or tapered lamp shade in a coordinating colour to our rug or curtains.
Totally an option, timeless, if it’s been good enough for everyone and their grandmas all this time then it’s good enough for us.
But even with the classic tapered shade; there’s more to it than just ‘fabric’.
· Linen is a natural and versatile fabric, it’s relaxed and casual but sophisticated (and looks expensive!).
· Cotton, much loved, revered, iconic! It’s also easy to clean and you’re going to find it in the widest array of colours and patterns.
· Velvet, ooh lux! It can give a space that rich, vintage feel and brings in a textural interest to a space, adds a little bit of visual depth.
· Metal, very contemporary and can bring in either an industrial or a modern touch. Metal lamp shades are great at taking on the personality of the room they’re placed in so if you’re design style is a little in between and you’re not wanting to commit too much either way, this could be the one.
