What are the advantages of using pendant lighting in your home office?

What you get out of your pendant lighting has a lot to do with where you’re putting them, that’s the first rule.

-        Task lighting: If you hang them right, pendant lights can act in the same way desk lamps do. Hung over the desk you’ll get a focused stream of light onto your work area, how focused that light is depends on the size of the shade and how far off the desk it’s hung.

-        Space saving: Using pendant lights in place of lamps gives you all the light with none of the surface area sacrifice. A sparky smart solution to working in a small space.

-        Aesthetics: Just like any other kind of light, pendant lights can fine tune the design of your space. Used as a main ceiling light, they add a focal point to the room. Whilst using them as task or ambient lighting will give you a less central point of interest at eye level.

How do I determine the ideal height of pendant lights above my home office desk?

-        Balance and Illumination: The perfect height for your pendant light finds the balance between sufficient task lighting and serving its purpose aesthetically. Without any nasty glare or shadows that might distract from the task at hand.

-        Eye level rule: 28 to 36 inches above the surface of the desk is a good place to start. There’s always wiggle room for personal preference and to make things perfectly ergonomic for you. But this height get the light source at or a little above eye level when you’re sat making the magic happen. This should cut out glare, shadows or anything else.

What styles of pendant lights are suitable for home office décor? How do you choose the right one?

Modern offices: Sleek and minimalist pendant light designs will fit right in. Look out for clean lines and contemporary finishes like chrome or brushed nickel.

Traditional offices: Classic and sophisticated. Traditional pendant lights will probably feature ornate details, like crystal or glass shades, and maybe a bronze or antique brass or bronze finish.

Industrial offices: Look for raw and rugged. Materials like metal and dark wood, with exposed bulbs (filament if you can) – that’s the way to achieve that urban charm.

Minimalist offices: Simple shapes, neutral colours. This combo will blend seamlessly with uncluttered and minimalist décor.

Vintage or retro offices: Retro shapes, bright colours or rusty oranges will evoke the nostalgic feel you want from a vintage or retro office.
