Which light fittings use globe and golf ball bulbs?

Firstly, Golf Ball bulbs are smaller than traditional pear-shaped bulbs, and there are mini versions too. Then the slightly larger Globe bulbs are much larger than both traditional GLS pear-shaped bulbs and Golf Ball bulbs.Essentially, size is the main difference between all three bulbs.

Secondly you must consider their designs. They all have different shapes and dimensions; therefore, habitually they are used in different types of lamp shade or light fitting.

The third thing to think about is: what is the bulb and shade used for? Is it task lighting, ambient or mood lighting, or purely accent or style lighting?

As the name indicates, its orb shape mirrors that of a golf ball, and are approximately 45mm in diameter, like a golf ball

Golf Ball bulbs

As the name indicates, its orb shape mirrors that of a golf ball, and are approximately 45mm in diameter, like a golf ball. A typical example is the Minisun 4 watt BC/B22 Golf globe in warm white

If you’re unsure of what ‘BC/B22’ means, refer to our light bulb guide, but basically this code number refers to the cap type, the part you insert into the light fitting. The BC/B22 is sometimes called a ‘Bayonet’ bulb, as it has small pins sticking out at either side. To insert it you push down and turn once clockwise. It is different from a typical screw type bulb, or the E27/ES.

Golf bulbs can be used in domestic and commercial buildings. They are often used in particularly decorative light fixtures, or floor and table lamps where the bulb will be visible. Often, table or floor lamps have some function, such as providing light for reading, or to create mood during an evening in the lounge. One example of a mood-creating lounge light fitting, that goes well with a Golf ball bulb, is a wall spot light called the ‘Angus Industrial Light’ in a gold, grey, or copper finish. You can select either an amber colour filament bulb or a brighter cool white one.

These types of bulbs are available in different cap types, LED technology, different lumens, and colours.

They are large, round bulbs, very often used in fashionable, or very decorative light fittings.

Globe bulbs

Globe bulbs are commonly much larger than Golf bulbs, and sometimes can be confused with the traditional GLS bulbs. Globe light bulbs are about twice as wide as a standard GLS bulb. Globe bulbs are approximately 125mm in diameter, much larger. They are large, round bulbs, very often used in fashionable, or very decorative light fittings. In fact, you will sometimes see them in pubs, bars, restaurants, and hotels. In the home, customers sometimes buy them as dining or kitchen lights. The Amber Minsun 6 watt ES/E27 Filament Giant Globe bulb is a good example. We do also stock table lamps that make good use of Globe bulbs, and the larger lamp shades tend to suit globe bulbs more.

Their size means that they are unsuitable for smaller lamps and fittings, but can be striking when paired with larger ceiling lights, like the Huckleberry three way lamp.

Energy-saving light bulbs

LED light bulbs are designed to look like the old incandescent light bulbs they surpassed in previous decades. Most have the classic globe shape or pear-shape you will be familiar with. As the technology improves and develops each year, LED’s or Light Emitting Diodes look more and more like the traditional bulbs that most countries became accustomed to during the 20th century.

Many of our own bulbs are designed in different colour temperature such as cool or warm white. These types of LED’s are designed to be opaque. You will see these online and in stores, described as ‘opal’ or ‘pearl’. For example, the Minisun 6 Watt ES/E27 GLS bulb illustrates the point about the opaque design.

The main two types of material they are designed with are glass (which is unsurprising), or a heat-resistant thermal plastic. The light bulb’s electrical components are hidden inside a white plastic base, but nowadays you can find models coming onto the market that have transparent bases too. This is a style that has been around for a long time, sometimes called ‘structural expressionism’, where you can see the inside components, or structure,  of a product or building :- the Minisun Cool White 4 watt SES/E14 Filament Golfball bulb is typical of this.
