Whether you’re looking for a good all-rounder of a garden light or planning a multi layered light extravaganza in your garden, outdoor wall lights and lanterns are a fantastic option. They’re a small way to make a big difference in your outdoor space and with our great value lights and the ongoing penny saving you can do with LED bulbs, you’re in for a winner.
With lighting that is wired directly into the mains we always suggest hiring a professional to do it for you. That’s the best way to keep yourself and your property safe but also protect the integrity of the light and make sure you’re setting it up for as long a life as possible.
With the top notch combo of LED technology, great quality and professional installation you’re looking at up to 50,000 hours of lighting before you’ve got to worry about mending or replacing your light.
We’ve got something for every taste, climate and outdoor space. If you're looking for the sturdiest, brightest, most classic option then it's the bulkhead wall lights everytime.
But if you are looking for something a little different... Starting off with materials, different materials will fair better in specific climates. We’ve got outdoor wall lights and lanterns in metal, glass or plastic. These might help you narrow down your search based on the climates, humidity and task you need your light to perform through, but it doesn’t narrow things down too much when you’re thinking of aesthetic preference.
Finishes, however, will. Where you can really find what suits your style is knowing whether you’re more partial to polished or brushed metallic, frosted or painted matte finishes. Combine these choices with the one that’s probably the most fun; colour. Pick a tone to go with or pop against the other colours in your outdoor space. Pick from; black, brown, clear, copper, gold, silver or white.
After all of those decisions have been made, now it's time for the extra little beams. Maybe you want your outdoor wall lights with sensors. Or maybe you want solar wall lights outdoors? Yeah, we have those too.
The biggest thing to consider when you’re trying to decide what material you want your outdoor wall light of lantern to be made of is; what sort of environment are you living in? The sort of climate, the severity of weather and the humidity are going to impact how rugged and sturdy you need to your wall light or lantern to be and how much wiggle room you have for picking aesthetically over functionally.
The main materials you’ll find outdoor wall lights and lanterns made of are metal, plastic and glass.
Metal has its obvious benefits, it’s sturdy, it can be reasonably inexpensive and it does a good job at protecting the light. Many metal outdoor lights come rated IP44 or higher. So, for something that’s going to last outside they’re a great option. There is also a lot of aesthetic variety in metal wall lights, although something to consider is that certain metals, like stainless steel, won’t do well in high humidity and might corrode or rust. However, metals like copper or brass are super resilient and one of the best options for a heavy-duty outdoor light.
Glass is a classic and elegant material, in outdoor lighting it can also be pretty weather proof with a common IP44 rating. The thing to consider with glass, however, is that although you’ll be able to get a wider variety of styles they won’t be quite as robust as the copper of brass options.
Plastic is a light and inexpensive material but it’s also the most at risk of being beaten around by extreme weather conditions. One or two summers could have the fixture warped and faded. So ultimately, it’s a cheap option if you’re only thinking of the short term.
Flood lights with PIR motion sensors are a fan favourite for security lighting. Having one fitted outside your home will give you and your family a flood of light when you need it without having to do anything but walk outside but it will also deter effectively with a bright and sudden light.
If you want something a little more subtle then finding some wall lights with PIR sensors will have the same effect and still deter people.
There are unique benefits to choosing mains powered and solar outdoor lighting. But there are things to consider that might sway you.
For instance, if you're a renter and you can't commit to hard wiring garden lighting then solar is the obvious choice. Whereas if you're free to hard wire whatever you want then you might like the longevity and guaranteed brightness of mains powered outdoor lighting.
