Solar lights are kitted out with "Photovaltaic" (or PV) cells that gather energy by using sunlight to charge their internal batteries. 

Most solar lights have built in sensors that detect low light which will trigger the cell into action, power the battery and voilá - light. It'll take between 4 and 10 hours to fully charge the battery, but that's in direct or indirect sunlight. So a day in the garden should get you through the night even when the weather's a little lacklustre.
