How do ceiling fans work?

Ceiling fans typically work by using an electric motor to spin blades that circulate air throughout a room depending on the position and rotation direction of the blades.

How effective are ceiling fans?

Many are surprised to find that ceiling fans can be effective year-round, not just in summer! In summer, the fan can be set to push air down to create a "wind chill" effect that cools you down by evaporating sweat and moving warm air away from the surrounding area. In winter, many ceiling fans can be reversed to pull air up and push warmer air trapped at the ceiling down the walls. In short, a ceiling fan can help to moderate your room's temperature all year round, not just cool it down in the warmer months!

How do you clean ceiling fans?

To clean a ceiling fan's blades, firstly turn off the ceiling fan. While you can use a microfibre cloth dampened with mild household cleaner to remove dust and build-up from ceiling fans, this can lead to some dust and dirt escaping onto the floor below if you haven't put something down to catch it. For this reason, some people use the inside of an old pillowcase to both wipe away dust while collecting it in the same pillowcase at the same time! Whichever method you prefer, always ensure you have stable footing if you're up a ladder to clean the blades. Extendable dusters can also be a good option, just make sure you have something laid down to collect any runaway dust that falls away from the duster's grasp.
