Gosh, there’s a lot to consider isn’t there? It’s such a personal decision. As always, the first step to making an informed decision is to be as informed as possible. So, get that trusty tape measure out! Once you’re armed with the room’s size, the ceiling height, and a good idea of the ambience you’re trying to create… we can start to talk options.
Flush and Semi-Flush Ceiling Lights: These lights are mounted directly to the ceiling. They’re seamless, compact options that don’t have to roll over on style. If you’re working with low ceilings or trying to achieve a clean, minimalist design then keeping things flush (or semi-flush) are a great way to do so.
Chandeliers: Can you honestly say that anything drums up feelings of elegance or sophistication more than a chandelier? Of course this is, in part, to due with the elegance of high ceilings, but if you’ve got them, you may as well make the most of them, right? As far as focal points go, this is one of the most fanciful options available. So, do you fancy it?
Ceiling Fans with Lights: A two for one! Who doesn’t love a multi-talented light fixture? If you’re curious as to all the ways that a ceiling fan can make life more bearable (in winter as well as summer!) then our ceiling fan size guide, blades and airflow blog might be exactly the light reading you’ve been looking for.
If you haven’t invested in a tape measure yet… what are you waiting for? Getting measurements is all we seem to talk about here! It’s no different this time – can you guess what step one is?
Step One: Measure the room. Length, width and ceiling height. Having these numbers will give you a good idea of the space you’ve got available and will help you determine what an appropriate size for the fixture is.
Step Two: Ceiling height. Important, probably the most important factor. If you’re working with a low ceiling, keeping it flush or semi-flush is your safest bet. You’ll get a good amount of light dispersal, but you’ll also keep as much of that precious headroom as you can. If you’ve got high ceilings then you can start to utilise that space with longer ceiling lights for bedrooms, for instance pendant lights or chandeliers.
Step Three: Consider the proportion to the room. Small ceiling lights can get lost in large rooms, and the inverse is true for large light fixtures in small rooms and can easily overwhelm the space and accompanying décor.
The short answer is; yes. The slightly longer answer is; yes, presuming that the light fixture and bulbs that you’re planning on using are compatible with the dimming function.
