What are the different types of living room lighting options available?

  1. Ambient lighting: If you don't know the feeling of walking into your living room after a long day and basking in the warm glow of ambient lighting, we're sorry to tell you but you've been missing out. The perfect lighting for winding down in the evening, watching a film, cuddling up with a loved one or losing yourself in some music. Good, layered, mood lighting is one of the most sure fire ways to get that glow. Having a floor lamps and a few table lamps dotted about will give that warm, layered illumination. 
  2. Task lighting: As much as the warm glow is a delightful thing to spend your evening drenched in, if you're a hobbyist then task lighting is definitely something to consider. Whether you're curled up on the couch with a book or crossword, or sat at a table doing puzzles or playing board games with the family, or maybe you just cannot put your work away. Having good task lighting with a bright light is going to make things way easier and save your eyes from strain. 
  3. Accent lighting: Lighting is supposed to work with your decor, enhance the very stylish choices you've made in your home (honestly, we love what you've done with the place). Accent lighting is for when you've got something you love so much you just have to shine a light on it so it's noticed round the clock. Got a specific family memory, accomplishment or piece of art that you don't want left behind after sunset? That'll be a job for a picture wall light.
  4. Decorative lighting: This one's just for fun. Anything that you think you'd just love to look at, some lighting may aswell be a sculpture, and there's nothing wrong with treating it as such.

How do I choose the right size of lighting fixture for my living room?

When you're sizing up light fittings for a living room there are a couple of things you've got to keep in mind. First of all what kind of light are we talking about? If we're talking about a ceiling light then the biggest concern is the size of the room. Well, it's not always that simple. If your living room is one room that isn't sectioned off at all then you'll probably be installing the light in the centre of the ceiling, in which case you want something that when installed still leaves atleast 7 ft of space beneath. Don't want any accidents, do we? The width of the light is ultimately more of a style choice, but one made with the consideration of light dispersal which will depend on the shape and drop of the light fixture. 

But, now, here is where it gets a little more complicated. If you have a larger, multi purpose, room. For instance if your living room and dining room are in the same room but sectioned off into separate areas, then you might want to bring in two light fittings to the living room. Just treat each section as its own room and place the lighting fixtures at the centre of each section. 

If you're looking to bring in either a floor or table lamp then your decision will be less influenced by the size of the room and rather by the size of the other furniture and decor pieces in the room. 

What are the best lighting fixtures for a small living room?

Top tip: keep things flush. In a small room you might want to avoid taking any unnecessary headspace away with low hanging lighting.
